In this online class, Karen presents and reviews a few real-life case studies to help you get a clearer picture of the benefits of looking at resuscitations and reviewing them yourself or with someone with a lot more experience in that area. She covers key points that often lead the way to understanding what got missed or what could have been done sooner.

In this online class, Karen presents 3 birth scenarios and talks through the process of debriefing (or case review) that she has done with hundreds of midwives and birth professionals. With each scenario, Karen reviews some history, what happened, the response and actions, and the outcome. Karen also walks through a typical debrief conversation.

Doing a debrief allows us to “make sense” of what happened and unpack the sequence of events leading up to the resuscitation. Debriefing is different than peer review as it can be helpful to talk to someone objective who knows the terrain. Karen has extensive experience, not only teaching resuscitation of the newborn, but also in supporting midwives as they learn and process their resuscitation experiences.

During this class, she reviews some key points as she covers a few real-life case studies:

• benefits of resuscitation efforts (or lack thereof)
• what got missed
• how to spot areas of vulnerability
• most common errors
• how to spot when we are most at risk of missing what the mother or baby needs
